My top 5 blogging tips for 2020

What are your plans for 2020? Are you thinking about starting a blog, or maybe revamping the one you already have?

You own blog is a great place to talk about all of your favourite things, document your journey through parenting, show off your baking skills, or share your latest travels and adventures.

Whatever you want to blog about, if blogging is one of your goals for next year here are some of my top blogging tips to help you get started…

#1 Choose a name for your blog

One of the first stumbling blocks many bloggers hit is choosing a name for their blog. It’s a lot harder than you may think! My best advice is to write down a list of words that describe you and what you want to blog about. Play around with different combinations of words until you find something that you like the sound of. Once you have picked a name don’t forget to do a Google search to make sure the domain name isn’t already taken.

#2 Do your research

If this is going to be your first blog, it pays to do your research and learn about the various aspects of blogging before you begin. There’s nothing worse than realising a few months down the line that you’ve been doing something wrong! There are lots of great online courses you can take to learn more about blogging.

Another excellent resource for bloggers is this great ebook from Click Consult – A simple guide to blogging and social media. This ebook will talk you through setting up your blog, growing your social media followers, tracking your blog’s performance, and lots more.

#3 Choose your hosting wisely

I’ve had this blog for over 4 years now and my other blog for 18 months – in this time I’ve used a few different hosting options until I finally found one that was right for me. Look around for a good deal but don’t be swayed by the cheapest option, often the cheaper hosts will have a lot of downtime issues meaning people won’t be able to reach your blog. I have settled on Siteground who have hosting options from £2.95 per month.

You can of course blog for free on WordPress or Blogger but if you plan to blog seriously and want to make money from blogging it’s worth choosing a paid-for hosting option from the start.

#4 Promote your blog on Social Media

Before you start writing blog posts it’s a good idea to set up social media accounts for your blog first. This way you can begin to invite people to follow you on social media and as soon as you start publishing blog posts you can promote them to your followers.

Post a link to every blog post on your social media accounts and don’t be scared to share more than once, especially on Twitter where posts don’t hang around for long. Follow and engage with other bloggers on social media, as well as people who are interested in the subjects that you write about.

#5 Use Google Analytics

You’ll want to know how your blog posts are performing and the best and most reliable source for stats is Google Analytics. If you set this up when you create your blog you’ll be able to access stats as soon as your site is live. It’s very simple to add to your blog, just a couple of lines of code need to be added. Once set up you can see how many people visited your blog, which posts they read, how long they stayed on your site and much more.

There is obviously a lot more to starting a blog but these 5 blogging tips should be helpful in getting you started. If you have any questions feel free to ask and good luck!
