As a Digital Marketing Manager by day and a blogger/social media freelancer by night, I spend a lot of time sitting at a desk as you can probably imagine.
My desk at work is pretty dull, we’re encouraged to follow a ‘clear desk’ policy so apart from a couple of photos it’s not very exciting. However, my desk at home is a bit more interesting with a few personal items added.
Furniture At Work asked me to share the story behind what I have on my desk, so here goes…
My blogging and freelance work is done in my ‘spare’ time which is usually of an evening or at the weekend. The house is usually quite noisy at those times, of an evening the husband will either be watching TV or playing on the PlayStation and at weekends Little H will be playing or asking a million questions like 7-year-olds do!
When I need to concentrate I take my laptop upstairs to the study/spare room and shut the door. We did a makeover of the study last year and it’s a nice place to sit and get some work done in peace.
It’s mostly used by my husband – the computer is his and used for work and computer games – but I’ve managed to carve out a little corner of my own where I can fit my laptop and have added a bit of a personal touch.
Here’s what is on my desk and why…
Photo frame – This frame was made by Little H last year at school for a Mother’s Day gift. She coloured it in rainbow colours because “it’s bright and will make you happy”. I put a photo in it that’s about 4 years old now but it’s still one of my favourites – it was from a park visit back when she didn’t go to school and we got to spend a couple of days a week together.
Painted cat – Little H painted this in the school holidays and gave it to me. It meant a lot as she did it while she was with relatives whilst I was working so it’s nice to know she thinks about me while I’m at work.
Toy – For those of you that aren’t familiar with kids toys, this little dog is from the LPS (Littlest Pet Shop) range. Every so often Little H will give me one of her toys to keep me company. It changes every so often and I even find random toys in my work bag quite regularly!
Card – The card was bought for me on my last birthday and I kept it here as the words make me smile.
Pens – The pen pot is obviously more of an essential item but it has my Minnie Mouse pencil bought at Disney which is a reminder of an amazing holiday, as well as a big furry cat pen that Little H gave to me as she had two.
Having things from Little H on my desk reminds me why I am working late into the night or at weekends, especially when I’m shattered and have been at work all day.
What do you have on your desk that motivates or inspires you?
