That’s it, the darker evenings and mornings are well on their way. It’s all downhill from now on!
Walking anywhere near roads with kids is frightening enough as it is, even more so when the days are getting shorter. I’m not really out with Little H much after dark, but on the days she has after school club until almost 6 pm it can be very dark as we get nearer the end of the year. It doesn’t help that school uniforms and coats are such dark colours, I do worry if we can be seen easily so was very interested to try out some reflective accessories.
Stay Safe And Seen
You might be thinking of reflective clothing like reflective vests and hi-viz clothing, but these options are much better…
Pogu specialise in reflective accessories to help make small children and pushchairs stand out in low light conditions. Their stickers reflect over 200m – the length of 20 double-decker buses – so there shouldn’t be any problem being seen by traffic.
They kindly sent us some textile stickers and reflective zip pulls to try out and we stuck these to Little H’s black school coat. I wasn’t too sure at first about putting stickers on her lovely back Next coat, so just started with one on the back.
I thought it actually looked quite cool so also put a sticker on each arm, the front, and on the back of the hood for when we’re walking in the rain. We also attached one of the zip pulls to her school coat as well. There were some left so I also put a few stickers on her book bag. This coat seems to be quite a popular one at her school so as well as making it safer it’s helped to make it a bit easier for Little H to identify.
There are plenty of stickers in a pack, you could easily cover 2 coats with one pack and we had quite a few left over. I might give some to my Dad as he goes running in the dark quite often! There’s a range of shapes from stars and flowers, to circles and triangles, so nothing too “girly”.
The stickers are really easy to apply, just stick on, press down and you’re done. You can iron over them to make them more permanent but ours have been stuck on for a couple of weeks now and aren’t coming off.
I haven’t tried to remove them but all you need to do is warm them up (with a hair dryer for example) and peel them off so they won’t ruin any items.
In the daylight the stickers are noticeable, but not too much. I think they look like they should be part of the coat.
We took a little walk in the dark to test them out. They definitely make her more noticeable, they stickers are extremely bright when a light shines on them as you can see here from the flash on my phone.
The zip pull also really stands out. We’ve found that it makes it easier for Little H to do her coat up as well, as there’s more for her little fingers to grip onto.
Pogu sell a wide range of reflective accessories, including hard surface stickers for pushchairs and scooters, as well as reflective laces and armbands.
These are definitely worth a purchase for peace of mind if you do go walking at night.
Do you worry about being seen on dark mornings and evenings with the kids?
