When you have lots to juggle, like kids, work and housework, you’ll often find it becomes easier when you get into the swing of things. This week’s working mum has some good routines sorted to fit in with her busy schedule of working full-time with 2 kids…
Please introduce yourself…
My name is Janine. I am a 30-year-old full-time working mum. Matthew is four and Chloe turned two in February. My hubby, the kids, the cat and me live in Ireland. We bought a new house back in October 2016. We are very happy here. We moved from West to East of Ireland.
What line of work are you in?
I am a Customer Support Executive for the last 7 1/2 years. I am working for a company who supplies patient management systems to practices in the country.
What hours do you work?
I work 5 days a week, 8.30am to 4.30pm.
Who looks after your children while you work?
Both my kids have been in creche since a very young age. Matthew since he was 5 months and Chloe since she was 6 months. They both love creche and it makes them very sociable. They both have their little friends which is the cutest, especially Chloe because she is only two years old.
Are you in the same job as before you had children?
I have been in the same job for 7 1/2 years as mentioned above. In Ireland you get 6 months maternity leave. After that you return back to work. I wouldn’t say my employer made it easier for me. The job just continues as normal.
How quickly did you return to work?
After 6 months of maternity leave.
Did you want to go back to work?
Yes, I am tipping my head off to mums who stay at home and manage to go to play groups and all. I wouldn’t be able to do that. I think I would lose it being at home all the time. I need something to do to be occupied.
What do you find the hardest about being a working mum?
Little time. On top of working and minding the children, there are things that need to be done in the background like cooking, cleaning, doing grocery shopping. The routine for the kids has been changed in creche so that they get their dinner/tea early there which means I don’t have to go into cooking mode when I get home from work. They only get a snack. It makes life definitely easier. I kind of found my routine now since we moved into our new home. My hubby is involved quite a bit.
What’s your favourite thing about being a working mum?
Work is like my little “me time”. The kids are well looked after in creche. After they had a day of playing and learning and I collect them, it’s nice to just sit down with them before they get ready for bed and watch some TV and just relax and cuddle together.
What’s your least favourite part of being a working mum?
Getting up early for work, which means waking the kids up early. I have to leave the house by 8am. Hubby is dropping them off to creche but sometimes I do feel guilty that they don’t get the sleep they need because of a bad night, ie bad dream or the youngest teething.
What advice would you give to mums returning to work after maternity leave?
Routine is the key. You will find at the start when returning to work that it can be a bit hectic. But after a week or two you will have it nailed.
Thanks Janine – I definitely agree that routine helps a lot!
