16 Rainy Day Activities To Keep Kids Entertained

Hands up who else is bored of the rain? Every weekend this year seems to have been wet and miserable and the weather forecast for the next week or so doesn’t look like it’s getting any better. How on earth do you do keep kids entertained for a whole weekend when you can’t go out for walks or to the park?

So until Spring arrives with some sunshine, I’ve made a list of 16 rainy day activities to keep kids entertained.

FREE (or very cheap) rainy day outings

Going out all the time as a family can end up costing a fortune, but there are lots of places you can go for free or for very little money…

Visit the library – let the kids browse through the books for a while and pick their favourites. Our local library also has a dressing up section and a table with colouring sheets. If you check online they often have craft or storytelling sessions at the weekends.

Visit a pet shop – This used to be my bribery when we had to go shopping! Kids can spend ages looking at the rabbits, guinea pigs and tropical fish and it doesn’t cost you anything unless of course you get talked into going home with a pet!

Go to a museum – Hours of fun and you feel good for doing something educational.

Splash in puddles – If you don’t mind getting a bit wet then get those waterproofs and wellies on and get out there.

Rainy Day Outings that cost money

If you don’t mind spending some money to keep your children from complaining that they’re bored, these are some fun suggestions…

Go and see a movie – an obvious way to spend a rainy afternoon but going to the cinema is a great way to keep the kids entertained, quiet and you can have a sit down for a change!

Go to softplay – many mums’ worst nightmare but it’s a great way to tire out the kids while you have a coffee. Invite some friends and you can also have a natter.

Check out an amusement arcade – Kids have lots of fun just playing on the 2p machines so it doesn’t have to cost you loads of money

Go bowling – All the family will enjoy a game or two of bowling – providing you let little ones win of course!

Go swimming – A perfect rainy day activity as well as some exercise for the kids. Plus it doesn’t matter if you get soaked on your way in or out!

Get bouncing at a trampoline park – We recently visited our local trampoline park with some friends and it was really good fun. The kids were absolutely shattered afterwards which is always a bonus.

Rainy Day Activities At Home

If you don’t fancy taking the kids outside at all when it’s rainy, there are also lots of fun ideas for things to do at home…

Have a duvet day – keep your PJs on, get on the sofa under a blanket and put on a family film. Snacks are also mandatory!

Get crafty – get the craft supplies out and let the kids get creative. Pinterest is a great source of ideas, I have a craft board full of ideas that might help.

Play a board game – a nice family activity to do together and get those brains working, just be careful of the inevitable family arguments!

Build a den – a simple den made out of some chairs and a bed sheet can keep kids amused for hours.

Have a tea party – lay out the tea set and biscuits, invite your kids’ favourite toys and enjoy

Do some baking – kids love baking and of course, you get something nice to eat at the end

Hopefully this list will give you a bit of inspiration next time it rains. What are your favourite rainy day activities for kids?

Ooh yes these are great ideas – half term wet day now planned – baking in the morning, board games whilst cake’s cooking then a duvet and family film afternoon whilst eating the spoils!
